Carpet Cleaning Pet Odor

You’ve gotten rid of the stains, but the smell is still there. Pets can be incredibly smelly, and that can be embarrassing when you have people visiting your home or, even worse, when your landlord is coming to check the house. How can you eliminate those pet odors from your carpet without getting rid of your pet? We have some tips for carpet cleaning pet odor for you here.

Carpet Cleaning Pet Odor

Enzymatic Cleaner is Your Friend

If you are looking to get rid of pet odors, your best friend should be a bottle of enzymatic cleaner. These are sold in pet supply stores and at most mass merchandisers. They’re fairly inexpensive, but when it comes to pet odors, they’re a complete lifesaver.

Why do enzymatic cleaners work so well? First, they work because they are usually tailored especially to pet odors. Many pet supply stores will sell these cleaners to help you remove stains and odors from any surface that you can imagine, including your carpet. There are other types of enzymatic cleaners available as well, but for pet odors, make sure that the type you’re buying is for your pet.

Enzymatic cleaner, as indicated by its name, uses enzymes to speed up chemical reactions. These proteins attach themselves to substances and help break it down, which is why you need to get the ones that are tailored for pet odors if that is what you’re dealing with. When the cleaner soaks into the stain, it starts to break it up and “eat away” at it, causing a variety of chemical reactions. These chemical reactions eliminate both the stain itself and the odors associated with the stain.

Another reason that you should use enzymatic cleaner for eliminating pet odor is because it’s non-toxic. Other cleaners that you may use around your home could make your family and your pets sick if they are ingested. Enzymatic cleaners are totally safe, so you can let them sit on a stained or smelly area without having to supervise it.

Another Method for Removing Pet Odor from Carpet

Even though enzymatic cleaners are the best choice for anyone who has pets and worries about getting rid of odors, there are other options that can help you get rid of the pet odors in your home.

What you will need

  • Air Fresheners
  • Baking soda
  • Distilled White Vinegar and water mixture (one to one mixture)
  • Vacuum Cleaner
  • Paper Towels
  1. First, use the baking soda, spreading it all over the carpet. Allow it to sit overnight, and then vacuum it up the next morning. The odor may be gone at this point, but if it is not, then go on to step two.
  2. Use distilled white vinegar on the areas of the carpet where the odor is most poignant. The vinegar will eat away at the odor. Allow it to sit for 20 minutes, and then rinse it by using a paper towel and dabbing at the area.
  3. At this point, most of the smell should be gone. If there is still some of the odor in the air, use some air fresheners. Don’t overdo it, because that can create some horrible odors in and of itself, but use plug-in air fresheners and the spray type. These will both help to keep the air clean and fresh. Check the label before you buy a spray air freshener, too; the ones with baking soda also disinfect the area they are sprayed in.

These are not the only ways to eliminate the pet odor in your carpets, but each of them will definitely help you as you try to get your home back from your stinky pets. They’re man’s best friend, but sometimes they just leave some smells in our carpets that we don’t want to deal with.
