How to Clean a Cat Litter Box

There are a variety of ways that you can clean a cat litter box, depending on what sort of cat litter you have, the temperament of your cat, and how many cats you own. These factors also play a huge role in how often you clean your litter box thoroughly. Daily care involves just scooping out the litter, but every once in awhile a more thorough cleaning process is required. For regular weekly cleaning, dishwasher soap and water should be sufficient. But, at least once a month, do a more intense cleaning. In this article, we’re going to teach you how to clean a cat litter box.

Cleaning a Cat Litter Box Using Vinegar

Before you start this technique, know that you should only be doing this once in awhile. You should be scooping your cat’s litter box at least once or twice a day depending on how many cats you have and your cat’s habits. As you probably know, most people who own a cat have multiple cats; two to four is pretty much the average. If you’re one of those people that have multiple cats, you should be cleaning the litter box relatively frequently (once or twice a week) in that case.

Using vinegar is a simple and inexpensive way for you to clean your cat litter box thoroughly without needing other materials. Vinegar is a great option because it neutralizes odors and is non-toxic for both people and animals.

What You Will Need

  • Vinegar
  • Rubber Gloves and Mask
  • Hose
  • Outside area to clean the litter box
  1. Fill the cat litter box about a quarter of the way with the distilled vinegar and allow it to sit for about twenty minutes.
  2. After the twenty minutes is over, swish the box around to make sure every corner has been cleaned. If it does not feel clean at this point, then dump out the vinegar and repeat step one.
  3. Take your hose and set it to a relatively high pressure spray if you are able to do so. Rinse out the box, and then allow it to sit outside and dry. If you don’t let it sit and dry thoroughly, your cat may not want to use it (cats are picky about strong orders).
  4. After it dries, wipe it out with a paper towel to get rid of any extra residue, and fill it with litter as you normally would.

Using Litter Box Wipes to Clean Your Cat Litter Box

There are a variety of other commercial products out there that make that claim that they are the best way to clean your litter box. One of these products is known as cat litter box wipes. These wipes come in a variety of scents, so you need to be careful when choosing which one to use. Cats are actually incredibly repelled by scents like citrus; so make sure that the wipes you are using do not have any sort of strong scent.

These wipes are relatively simple to find; they’re sold at most pet supply stores. On top of that, they’re also easy to use. All you have to do is fully empty the litter box, including scraping away what may be caked on the edges of it, and wipe it down with the wipes. These wipes are meant to sanitize your box without a lot of effort. It is still recommended that you clean the box with something like vinegar every few months, even if you are using the wipes. The vinegar can still get rid of odors that the wipes may not be able to on their own.
