General Marble Stain Removal

When trying to clean your marble surface you need to make sure you are careful in following the steps to properly remove marble stains. Marble can be quite pricey and you need to take extra care of the surface when cleaning stains. If you feel uncomfortable taking on the project yourself you can always call in the professionals.

To begin the cleaning process you will need to use a sponge to gently wipe the marble clean. Do not use any soap as this may hinder the efforts to remove the stain with the poultice.

Dry the area with a clean cloth.

Next, you will need to prepare the poultice. This is a type of powder used to absorb stains from marble. If this is the first time cleaning the marble surface it might be a good idea to and purchase your poultice at a marble or hardware store. The people working at either of these stores should be able to help you pick the best product for your marble stain. Tip: If you feel comfortable you can make your own poultice using powdered whiting and hydrogen peroxide. The whiting can be found at most hardware stores in either the powdered form or paper form.

After making the poultice you will need to prepare it for the marble stain removal. If you are using a powdered poultice mix it with a liquid stain removing chemical (hydrogen peroxide). The mixture should be the consistency of peanut butter. If you are using a paper poultice, soak the paper in the stain removing chemical (hydrogen peroxide).

Next, apply the poultice mixture to the marble stain. Ensure you have completely covered the stain thoroughly.

Cover the stain and poultice with plastic wrap. Take extra care to tape the edges down. This will seal the poultice as to draw up the marble stain from the porous surface.

Allow the poultice to dry completely. This will take a few hours.

Once the poultice is dry remove the tape ad plastic wrap. Then remove the poultice by rinsing the stained area with clean water.

Dry the marble surface carefully with a clean white cloth. The white cloth will allow you to see if there is any stain left on the surface of the marble.

Inspect the area. If the stain remains you can re-apply the poultice as needed.

If you have a really stubborn stain you can use a very small amount of borax when cleaning the marble. Be careful when using the borax. You do not want to use too much as this will cause more harm to the marble surface.

To rinse the borax, when cleaning the marble, use lukewarm water and then thoroughly dry the area.
Remember whenever there is a spill on your marble surface you should try and clean the mess up as soon as possible otherwise the stain could become more difficult to remove. Once there is a stain on the marble it is a little more difficult to remove because marble is porous and the stain has seeped into the precious stone.
