The most Common way to Remove Roof Stains

What you will need:

  • Bleach
  • Water
  • TSP

Bleach is the most common way to clean roof stains, but you need to ensure that you do not use too much bleach. If the solution is made too potent you could be doing more damage than good. To remove roof stains using bleach you can follow these easy steps:

  1. Prepare any of the trees or plants around the roof and the down spouts. Plant life is fragile and the bleach can cause it to die. You can prepare the plant life by spraying it down with water.
  2. Next you will want to prepare the bleach solution. You will need to mix 1 part bleach with three parts water. To help the cleaning process you can put a very small amount of TSP in the mixture. You should try and make a large amount of the solution so that you will not need to continue making it. This will save you time.
  3. You will then need to put the solution into some type of sprayer for a wider range of cleaning. Do not power wash the roof. This can cause serious damage to the shingles. Tip: Do not scrub the shingles as this can cause them to loosen or remove some of the finish.
  4. Allow the solution to dry for a few minutes. Do no leave it on the roof for too long.
  5. Once the solution is dry you will need to rinse the roof with the hose. Ensure that you do use to much water pressure.
  6. After the roof dries you will need to inspect the roof. If the roof stains remain you can repeat steps 2-5 until removed. If the surface of the roof still looks slimy this means that the steps will need to be repeated. Do not make the bleach solution any stronger!

If you were unable to remove the roof stains with the bleach solutions it may be time to seek a professional. There are some roof stain removal steps that tell you to use a Lye-based solution, but this can cause serious damage to the shingles if done the wrong way.
