How to Remove Stains from Plastic Containers

Plastic containers can be easy to stain, but difficult to clean. Products like tomato sauces, coffees, and teas can make lingering stains that are hard to get rid of with a simple rinse through the dishwasher. Here is a simple way for you to eliminate these stains from your favorite plastic pitcher or other plastic container.

What you will need:

  • Hot water
  • Dry or liquid dishwasher detergent
  • Soft bristle brush

Note: Make sure that what you have is dishwasher detergent. This is very different than dish soap. Dishwasher detergent is often more heavy-duty than just plain dish soap, and its abrasive qualities will help you to get rid of your stains more readily.

  1. Fill your container or pitcher with hot water. It doesn’t need to be boiling hot water, just hot enough so that it can clean the plastic container effectively and without issues.
  2. Add around two tablespoons of dishwasher detergent to the water and mix it together thoroughly. Add a bit more if it is a larger container (at a rate of about 1 tablespoon per 2 quarts of water).
  3. Let the mixture sit in the container for about 15 minutes.
  4. Rinse the container. If the staining is not gone, then scrub the inside of the container with the soft bristle brush, rinse the container again, and repeat the process if necessary.

How to Remove Stains from Plastic Laminate Countertops

The kitchen is a very common place for stains and messes, and plastic laminate countertops always seem to get stained one way or another. There are a lot of ways that people say that you can remove the stains from plastic laminate countertops, but we’re going to look at one of the more common ways to do so.

What you will need:

  • Nail polish remover
  • Baking soda
  • White Rags (to prevent staining from the dye in the rag)
  • Safety glasses
  • Rubber Gloves
  • Water
  • Paper towels

During this whole process, make sure to wear safety goggles and rubber gloves. The chemicals you are using can cause irritation to the skin and eyes if you are not careful.

  1. Take the baking soda and water and mix them to make a thick paste. This thick paste should then be taken and applied to the stain. After application, lay a wet paper towel over the mixture so that it stays moist as the stain is removed.
  2. After about 15 minutes, take the wet paper towel off and dry the area with a dry rag. In some cases where the stain is not that dark, it may already be gone. If not, take another rag and wet it with a solvent such as nail polish remover. Take the rag and rub away the stain.
  3. After the stain has been rubbed away, dry the area with a dry rag.

If you wish, you can prevent future staining by applying a protective coating with a countertop polish or other product that is meant for countertops. These are usually available in a spray or liquid that you can wipe on. Make sure to wipe off any excess after you are done.
